THE STEPS TO MAKING HOMEMADE CARAMEL SAUCE

  1. Melt granulated sugar. Add the granulated sugar to a saucepan and melt over medium heat. It will start to form clumps but will eventually completely melt. When it melts, it will change to an amber-brown color and be a slightly thicker consistency.
  2. Add dairy-free butter. Cut the butter into cubes before adding it to the saucepan. When you add the butter, it will bubble rapidly but keep stirring until it is melted.
  3. Add dairy-free heavy whipping cream. Slowly pour the heavy whipping cream into the saucepan. Once again, it will bubble rapidly but be sure to be constantly stirring, so you don't burn it.
  4. Boil. Allow the mixture to boil for 1 to 2 minutes without stirring on medium heat.
  5. Allow cooling. After boiling, remove from heat and allow to cool for approximately 15 minutes before using.

HOW TO STORE CARAMEL SAUCE

After completely cooling your caramel, add it to a sealed container (like a glass jar). **Caramel will thicken as it cools. ** Refrigerate for up to 1 month. The one thing to note about caramel sauce is that it solidifies in the refrigerator. Reheat the caramel sauce in the microwave for no more than 30 seconds, and your sauce will be ready to use!

You can also freeze your caramel sauce in an airtight container or glass jar for up to 3 months—Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature before reheating and using.

All it takes is making this homemade caramel sauce once, and you will be hooked!
